# Change the PI on a Study

Note On Digital Delegation-enabled studies, when you update the assigned PI on the study, the status of any existing study delegations are updated to **Proposed**. The delegations will become active again when the new PI approves.

Use this action when a study’s Principal Investigator (PI) is changing to a new PI.

## Change the PI assigned to a Study

Complete the following steps to change the PI on a study:

1. Navigate to the **Studies** tab.
2. Select the study.
3. Select **View Study Details**.
4. Select **Change PI** from the Actions menu **(…)**.
5. Enter a response as to whether the PI is staying on the study.
6. **Select** the incoming PI.
7. Select **Continue**. A banner will advise that the change is processing.
8. **Digital Delegation Studies’ Additional Actions** : 
  - The new PI assignment is active and the new PI must approve all existing and new staff delegations
  - If the outgoing PI is not staying on the study, their assignment status is updated to Make Inactive.
  - If the outgoing PI remains on the study:

  - They are assigned as Sub-Investigator.
  - Their Assignment Status is _Proposed_.
  - They are available to receive delegations.
