# Require an Unlock Code to Sign

You can lock the signature fields to ensure that a participant or signatory discusses the study with site personnel before signing (virtually or in person). Once the participant or signatory is well-informed about the study and is prepared to sign, you can generate an unlock code to open the signature fields.

1. Locate the document in **Documents \> Library** or **Studies \> Select the study \> Consent Forms**.
2. Select **Edit eConsent** from the Document Actions menu **(…)**.
3. Select **Document Settings** or **Settings** from the right panel.
4. Turn on the **Requires Unlock Code to Sign** toggle.
